GOSHEN (Heb. גֹּשֶׁןa), a grazing area in the N.E. of lower Egypt, east of the delta. Goshen was the residence assigned to Jacob and his family, and it was there that the Israelites lived in Egypt (Gen. 45:10; Ex. 9:26).
1. Goshen in Egypt. Geographically, Goshen is closely linked with the land and city of Raamses. In Genesis 47:6, 11, the pharaoh assigned Goshen to Joseph’s family, the later narrator describing it as “the land of Rameses.” Goshen and the land of Rameses are thus largely identical.
Goshen. The name of a part of Egypt where the Israelites dwelt during the whole period of their sojourn in that country. It was probably situated on the eastern border of the Nile, extending from the Mediterranean to the Red Sea. It contained the treasure-cities of Rameses and Pittim.
Goshen, located in the northeastern region of Egypt, served as a refuge and a safe haven for the Israelites during their time of captivity. As they journeyed through the wilderness, God led them to this fertile land, separate from the hardships and plagues that befell the rest of Egypt.
