Calarcá fue fundada en el año de 1886 por Segundo Henao y Román María Valencia, siguiendo la fundación antioqueña de las ciudades de Pereira, Filandia, Circasia y Salento. Los fundadores fueron, principalmente, Segundo Henao y algunos otros compañeros de exploración provenientes de Salento, como Basilio Valencia y Miguel Santana.
