Charles Burwell born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1955. He received his B.F.A. in painting from Temple University and his M.F.A. in painting from Yale University. He is the 2008 recipient of the Pew Fellowship in the Arts in Painting and the Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant.
Charles Vincent Burwell joined the Conservatory in 2020. An educator, actor, singer, dancer, entrepreneur, musician, and musical theater composer, Burwell has long felt that diversity and creative identity are instrumental in the fashioning of a well-rounded artist.
Burwell received his BFA in painting from Temple University’s Tyler School of Art in 1977 and his MFA in painting from Yale University in 1979. His work has been exhibited and collected broadly, and he is the recipient of numerous awards, including a Pew Fellowship in the Arts in 2008.

Charles Burwell, Red Bio, 36×37 inches; I loved the way the drips creates a wavy edge at the bottom that then created a ridged shadow. I don’t remember earlier work created with such abandon to the joys of juicy color and texture.
