St. Xavier's College is a private, Catholic, autonomous higher education institution run by the Bombay Province of the Society of Jesus in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. It was founded by the Jesuits on 2 January 1869.
It became a Constituent College of the University, as a result of the Mumbai University Act 1953. It is entrusted by the University with the task of preparing students for degrees in Arts, Science, Commerce, Mass Media, Management Studies and Information Technology.
In May 2006, it was declared a College with Potential for Excellence by the UGC. From July 2006, it became an Autonomous College (the first in West Bengal). In 2011, NAAC assessed St. Xavier’s as an Autonomous College with a CGPA of 3.53 on a scale of 4. In 2012, the UGC team visited the college. The team granted the renewal of Autonomy.
