India (1947–present) Shaniwar Wada is a historical fortification in the city of Pune, India. Built in 1732, [1] it was the great seat of the Peshwas of the Maratha Empire until 1818. Following the rise of the Maratha Empire, the palace became the center of Indian politics in the 18th century. [2]
Built in around 1736, by Bajirao Peshwa, Shaniwar Wada is located in the heart of Pune city. Originally constructed as a residence for the Peshwas, it is a stately mansion, depicting influence of Mughal designs in its architecture. The wada displays architectural excellence.

The 18 peths or wards created by the Peshwas were the birthplace of the wadas of Peshwai Pune. Situated on deep narrow plots, Wadas are usually two to three storeys high. The symbolic core of Old Pune is Shaniwarwada (The Saturday Estate) or the Peshwa’s residence.
Shaniwar Wada. The construction of this palace of the Peshwas was started on a Saturday and hence the name (Saturday is Shaniwar in Hindi). This 13-storey building was started in 1730 by Bajirao I and was finally made ready in 1732.
