A converted Christian who rose from rural poverty to a career in Japanese politics, Ohira Masayoshi was prime minster of Japan from 1978 to 1980. He had earlier held various posts within the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and served repeated terms in the Japanese legislature before ascending to the executive cabinet.
