Stone Town is a city of prominent historical and artistic importance in East Africa. Its architecture, mostly dating back to the 19th century, reflects the diverse influences underlying the Swahili culture, giving a unique mixture of Arab, Persian, Indian and European elements.

Jul 5, 2019 · Stone Town gets its name from the ornate houses built with local stone by Arab traders and slavers during the 19th Century. It is estimated that around 600,000 slaves were sold through Zanzibar between 1830-1863. In 1863 a treaty was signed to abolish the slave trade, agreed to by the British and the Omani Sultans that ruled Zanzibar at this time.
- Fill your Stomach at the Forodhani Gardens Food Market. Coming in first, is my favourite thing to do each and every evening in Stone Town, Zanzibar. This means if you arrive in the late afternoon, it’s probably one of the first snaps of the place you’ll get.
- FREE!! Wander the Old Fort. Now housing an art gallery and curio market, the Old Fort is an impressive, if not crumbling structure along Stone Town’s promenade.
- See the Giant Tortoise on Prison Island. Probably the town’s most popular day trip, the tour to Prison Island to see the giant tortoises is a really great thing to do in Stone Town, Zanzibar.
- Learn About Zanzibar’s Sultans at the Palace Museum. At just $3 USD, the entrance fee to Stone Town’s iconic Palace Museum is well worth it, given you’ll get a good hour’s worth of interesting history about the island care of a free guide (tip additional).
- Have a meal at a rooftop restaurant. One of the unmissable things when visiting the historic part of Zanzibar City is dining in a rooftop restaurant in Stone Town.
- Take a photo in front of Freddie Mercury’s house. Queen’s iconic frontman, Freddie Mercury, was born in Zanzibar. He spent his childhood as Farrokh Bulsara in Stone Town.
- Get lost in Stone Town street maze. Stone Town is like a labyrinth. And getting lost in its maze of narrow, winding streets is an adventure in itself.
- Sign up for a Stone Town walking tour. I’m not going to lie. I’m a tour guide and was a bit skeptical about having a private tour. But other solo travelers were telling me all about those tours in Jambiani, and then again in Nungwi, so I had to see it for myself.
Sep 10, 2023 · Stone Town was the birthplace of Freddy Mercury. The island became famous as a slave auction port of Africans that became hugely profitable. The island changed hands throughout the ages but came under the control of the Omani sultanate for most of the 18th and 19th century where slave trading still dominated.
