Odaira acted as the managing director of Hitachi from 1910 to 1929 and the president from 1929 to 1947. In 1947, Odaira was ordered out of this position by the U.S. occupation authorities. In 1951, this order was lifted, and he returned to the company as chairman emeritus.
At the time when Odaira was bringing his lofty ambitions to his new job at Hitachi Mine, the town of Hitachi was just another impoverished village. This village, however, was destined to expand rapidly along with the rapid growth of both Hitachi Mine and Hitachi the company.
Hitachi’s founder Namihei Odaira was born three years before Hesse, in 1874. After graduating from Tokyo Imperial University, he went on to work at Kosaka mine, the Hiroshima Hydroelectric Power Company, Tokyo Electric Light Company, and, in 1906, at Hitachi mine.
