Baron Masuda Takashi (益田 孝, November 12, 1848 – December 28, 1938), was a Japanese industrialist, investor, and art collector. He was a prominent entrepreneur in Meiji, Taishō and early Shōwa period Japan, responsible for transforming Mitsui into a zaibatsu through the creation of a general trading company, Mitsui Bussan.
Description. Businessman. Born in Niigata, the son of a minor official to the magistrate of Sado. He studied English and accompanied Nagaoki Ikeda in the 1863 mission to Europe. In 1871, he entered Ministry of Finance at the invitation of Kaoru Inoue andserved as Zohei Gonnokami (Master of the mint). He resigned in 1873.
On July 1, 1876 the former Mitsui & Co.* was formed, with 16 employees and 27 year-old Takashi Masuda at the helm. It was what we would now call a venture capital company, and it maintained those values as a trading company.

Takashi Masuda was a Private First Class at the time the photograph was taken. Staff Sergeant Kazuo Masuda was killed in action in Italy on August 27, 1944. Kazuo sacrificed his life so that his two comrades could escape with vital information that helped the Allies sucessfully cross the Arno River.
