In this article, I look at the birth and evolution of London Weekend Television, and at the role that technology played in developing its sport and drama output.
In 1968, London Weekend Television was the new company in town. ATV had been thought to be going a bit down-market by the ITA, and LWT were seen as being likely to be more highbrow and produce better quality programmes.
The successful weekend consortium eventually decided on London Weekend Television (LWT). As Thames needed only the central London offices at Television House, Rediffusion's Wembley studios - along with many of its staff - were picked up by LWT.
