Dorothy Hill, AC, CBE, FAA, FRS (10 September 1907 – 23 April 1997) was an Australian geologist and palaeontologist, the first female professor at an Australian university, and the first female president of the Australian Academy of Science.
May 13, 2024 · Dorothy Hill was an Australian geologist known for her seminal work on corals dating to the Paleozoic Era (roughly 539 million to about 252 million years ago) and championing the efforts of women in academia in 20th-century Australia. Hill became the first woman employed as a professor in Australia.
In 1956 Dorothy Hill was elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science. She spent time serving on Academy committees, becoming Vice-President in 1969, and on the death of Dr D.F. Martyn in 1970, she became President. She is the only woman to have occupied the position of President of the Academy.
Geologist. Dorothy Hill was born in 1907 in Taringa, Brisbane. Hill received a scholarship to the University of Queensland and between 1925 and 1929 she completed a three year Bachelor of Science (geology) with first class honours and was the first woman awarded a gold medal for most outstanding graduate of the year.
Dorothy Hill (1907–1997), geologist, was born on 10 September 1907 at Taringa, Brisbane, third of seven children of Robert Sampson Hill, an English-born draper, and his Queensland-born wife Sarah Jane, née Kington. Robert was later a director of the retail firm Allan & Stark Ltd.
