Morarji Ranchhodji Desai (29 February 1896 – 10 April 1995) was an Indian independence activist and politician who served as the 4th Prime Minister of India between 1977 and 1979 leading the government formed by the Janata Party.
The premiership of Morarji Desai extended from 24 March 1977 to 15 July 1979. In the 1977 Indian general election Morarji Desai led the Janata Party to victory against the Congress party. Upon taking office, Morarji Desai became the first Indian Prime Minister not belonging to the Congress party.

He was the first Indian Prime Minister who did not belong to the Indian National Congress. Before India's independence he served as Revenue Minister of Bombay (1937 to 1939 and in 1946.
Prime Minister Morarji Desai resigned after the strength of the Janata Party in the Lok Sabha dropped, but was asked to continue until a successor was found.
