Tobias Lear (September 19, 1762 – October 11, 1816) was the personal secretary to President George Washington. Lear served Washington from 1784 until the former-President's death in 1799. Lear's journal details Washington's final moments and his last words: 'Tis well.
The following circumstantial account of the last illness and death of General Washington was noted by T. Lear, on Sunday following his death, which happened on Saturday Eveng Decr. 14th. 1799, between the hours of ten and eleven.
Tobias Lear served as the executive secretary to George Washington from 1786 to 1799. Lear was born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire and attended the Dummer Charity School (now known as the Governor's Academy), and then Harvard University from 1779 to 1783.
