General Robert Clive was the EIC’s governor, ruling over the regions of today’s Bihar, West Bengal, Orissa, Jharkhand and Bangladesh. When Clive had first arrived in India, in 1744, he was impoverished by debt. Thanks to Bengal, he became the richest self-made man in Europe, estimated to be worth over £100 million in today’s money.
