On his accession as Duke of Guise, he ceded it to his brother Claude, Duke of Aumale. It was later used as a title by Henri d'Orléans, the youngest son of Louis-Philippe , King of the French and Duke of Orléans .

After his father’s death in 1550 his brother, Francis (1519-1563), became Duke of Guise and granted him the junior title of Duke of Aumale.

He became the first Duke of Guise in 1528. He was the second son of René II, Duke of Lorraine, and Philippa of Guelders. He was educated at the French court of Francis I.
