Morris Stoloff, born in Philadelphia in 1898, became a master of the violin at an early age, performing with the Los Angeles Philharmonic while still in his teens. In 1928, during the early months of Hollywood's sound era, he was hired by Paramount Pictures for the newly-created position of concert master, putting him in charge of coming up with music (used sparingly in films of the day) for the majority of the studio's movie releases.
