Sykes "Smith" Ballew (January 21, 1902 – May 2, 1984) was an American actor, sophisticated singer, orchestra leader, and a western singing star. He also was billed as Buddy Blue , Charles Roberts , and Billy Smith .
Smith Ballew. Soundtrack: Magic in the Moonlight. Began in show business as a radio singer. In the early 1930s he became one of the first singing screen cowboys. He starred in a series of musical westerns for Paramount, and another series for 20th Century Fox. In later years he was featured in supporting roles well into the 1950s.
Smith Ballew’s major concerns were with playing guitar and banjo, and he had undertaken formal studies in music, as well as woodshedding his talents by learning jazz styles from a negro musician who lived close to town.

After attending Sherman High School in Sherman, Ballew attended Austin College and the University of Texas from 1920 to 1922.
