Synopsis. The demanding and iron-fisted Russian Czarina Catherine the Great (Tallulah Bankhead) has a domestic dispute with her latest lover Variatinsky (Donald Douglas) which countess Anna Jaschikoff (Anne Baxter), the Czarina's confidante and lady-in-waiting, gleefully reports to Chancellor Nicolai Ilyitch (Charles Coburn).
