One of the tragic tales of WWII took place in Himeyuri, and the Himeyuri Peace Museum and Himeyuri Cenotaph are fitting tributes. An ancient cave twisting miles into the earth which also serves as a sobering reminder of Japan's recent past. There is much to see and think about here.

Himeyuri no tou ( Himeyuri no tou) A war memorial located in Itoman City, Okinawa Prefecture. It was erected after the end of World War II to commemorate the schoolchildren who were killed in the fierce battle of Okinawa.

Another much visited memorial to the bloody Battle of Okinawa in 1945 is Himeyuri no To. This is a cave where 210 high school girls and their teachers, who were working as student nurses were killed by American fire, including a gas bomb dropped into the cave.
