A boy band is a vocal group consisting of young male singers, usually in their teenage years or in their twenties at the time of formation. Generally, boy bands perform love songs marketed towards girls and young women. Many boy bands dance as well as sing, usually giving highly choreographed performances.
- 1962: The Beatles. Deserving of being ranked as the most influential pop group of all time, the Beatles hold a different place in history than all other boy bands.
- 1966: The Monkees. The success of the Beatles' film "A Hard Day's Night" inspired film director Bob Rafelson and TV producer Bert Schneider to team up and put together a TV show about the misadventures of a band.
- 1969: The Jackson 5. The five Jackson brothers—Tito, Jermaine, Jackie, Marlon, and Michael—had significant success performing regionally in the Midwest before earning a Motown Records recording contract with an audition tape sent to label head Berry Gordy.
- 1970: The Osmonds. The brother group that became the Osmonds began as a barbershop quartet in 1958. They then became TV regulars on "The Andy Williams Show."
- Backstreet Boys. Adult contemporary music, Bubblegum pop, Pop music. 23,835 votes. Assembled in the early 90s, the Backstreet Boys have earned their place as one of the best boy bands to grace the music industry.
- *NSYNC. Bubblegum pop, Pop music, Teen pop. 18,302 votes. Few groups can compete with the cultural impact of *NSYNC, who dominated the music scene in the late 90s and early 2000s.
- New Kids on the Block. Hip hop music, Bubblegum pop, Pop music. 16,318 votes. Arguably the pioneers of the modern boy band phenomenon, New Kids on the Block dominated the airwaves in the late 80s and early 90s.
- One Direction. Pop rock. 25,526 votes. One Direction skyrocketed to stardom after their formation on the UK reality show The X Factor in 2010. Comprised of five talented individuals, the band quickly garnered attention with their debut single "What Makes You Beautiful."
