Based on two short stories by novelist Irwin Shaw, "In the French Style" and "A Year to Learn the Language," In the French Style (1963) marked Jean Seberg's first American film in three years, even though it was filmed entirely in France.

Jul 3, 2020 · The young American student Christina James (Jean Seberg) comes to Paris to live in the art scene. After six months in Paris, she meets sixteen-year-old Guy (Philippe Forquet) at a crowded gallery showing and their romance develops. Later, she enjoys encounters with European men.
Seberg’s Christina James leaves Chicago for Paris to learn how to paint only to become sidelined by a series of love affairs, but her relationships with a callow youth (Phillipe Forquet), a photographer (Jack Hedley), and a journalist (Stanley Baker) all end badly.
Robert Parrish's "In the French Style" features excellent black-and-white location photography, by Michel Kelber. The performances are wonderful, and Seberg's carries the film, which loses direction after, to quote, "the years pass quickly," in Paris.
