When You Read This Letter (French: Quand tu liras cette lettre) is a 1953 French-Italian drama film directed by Jean-Pierre Melville and starring Philippe Lemaire, Juliette Gréco and Yvonne Sanson. It was shot at the Billancourt Studios in Paris.
July 29, 2017. Juliette Greco plays Therese, a nun-in-training who returns to “civilian” life to care for her young sister Denise (Irene Gatter). When Denise is compromised by love-’em-and-leave-’em stud Max (Philippe LeMaire), Therese forces Max at gunpoint to propose marriage to the hapless girl.

Dismissed by Melville in its time as “a very conventional, very sensible film” made in part to fund his film studio, When You Read This Letter is a slightly uncharacteristic but nevertheless fascinating swerve in the director’s early career into the realm of melodrama.
Thérèse and Denise’s parents have just passed away and Thérèse delays entering a convent to take care of her younger sister. Max, a young unrepentant seducer, takes advantage of Denise, who then tries to commit suicide. Thérèse requests that he marry Denise, but Max plans to seduce Thérèse instead.
After a novice nun learns of the sudden death of her parents, she leaves the convent to manage the family business and look after her teenage sister. Both of them fall prey to a womanizing mechanic with psychopathic tendencies.
