  5. Lord Byron’s narrative poem Mazeppa (1819) was based on the popular legend about the early life of the Ukrainian leader Ivan Mazepa (1639–1709). Byron's poem, in particularly the image of the naked hero tied to the back of a horse, inspired numerous paintings, musical compositions, stage plays, novels, etc.
