The isolated queen's pawn (also known as an IQP or isolani) refers to an isolated pawn on the d-file. Isolated queen's pawns cannot be protected or supported by another pawn, and they are never part of a pawn chain because the pawns on adjacent files (in this case the pawns on the e-file and c-file) no longer exist.
The isolated queen's pawn (isolani) is an extremely important pawn structure. It arises in many openings variations : the Queen's Gambit Accepted, Slav, Tarrasch Defense, Sicilian Alapin or French Tarrasch to name a few. This structure is equally common with either color.

There are many different types of pawns, but an isolated pawn (also known as an isolani) is a pawn that cannot be supported or protected by another pawn. Unlike a backward pawn , an isolated pawn is never part of a pawn chain because there aren't any pawns on adjacent files.
An isolated pawn on the d-file is called an isolated queen pawn or simply an isolani. In addition to the open or half-open c- and e-files, the isolated queen pawn can provide good outposts on the c- and e-file squares diagonally forward of the pawn, which are especially favourable for the player's knights.
