Plot. Petty thief Nick Robey botches a robbery, shooting and killing a policeman, and leaving his partner Al severely wounded. Nick escapes with over $10,000 and, deliberately losing himself in the crowd, makes his way to a local swimming pool. At the pool, he meets bakery worker Peg Dobbs, and accompanies her home to her family's apartment.

Nick hides out at a public pool, where he meets Peg Dobbs. They go back to her apartment, and he forces her family to hide him from the police manhunt.

Nick and his associate Al Molin have planned a targeted mugging, their victim who will be carrying a large cache of cash for a payroll. In the mugging gone wrong, Nick is forced to go on the run, he only remembering Al's advice to blend into the crowd to avoid suspicion and thus capture.
