Synopsis. With her surgical operations-cum-performances, Orlan makes the operating table her artist’s studio, where she produces work consisting of videos, drawings made with her own blood, reliquaries containing her flesh, shrouds, texts….
Carnal Art loves mockery and the baroque, the grotesque and other neglected styles since it opposes itself to social pressures the burden of which is carried by both, the human body and the work of art.
Orlan is a performance artist. She transforms her image, changes her body, through cosmetic surgery. First, she creates a robot portrait by merging several works: the birth of Venus, Psyche, Diana, Europe and the Mona Lisa. portrait that surgeons apply to her face and body.
