The history of Krishnath College, styled after England's Oxford University, is a part of the history of western education in Bengal and, in a wider sense, forms a chapter in the history of social and cultural progress of Bengal in the 19th and 20th centuries.
On 29th July, 1863 Sir Cecil Beadon, the then lieutenant Governor of Bengal laid the foundation of the present college building a wonderful specimen of Saracenic – Gothic Architecture style. In 1865 Berhampore college attained the full status of a college with B.A and law classes.

Krishnanath College was founded on 20th October 1853. The college was built with the assistance of landlords and other eminent people of the district of Murshidabad of Bengal. In 1903, the college was re-christened as Krishnanath College.
