Destrehan is a census-designated place (CDP) in St. Charles Parish, Louisiana, United States. At the 2020 census, its population was 11,340. It is located on the east bank of the Mississippi River. Destrehan is part of the New Orleans—Metairie—Kenner metropolitan statistical area.
Built in 1787, Destrehan Plantation is the oldest documented plantation home in the lower Mississippi Valley. The plantation is open seven (7) days a week with the exception of major holidays from 9am to 4pm. The first tour begins at 9:30am. Duration: 1-2 hours.

The Destrehan family in Louisiana begins with Jean Baptiste Honore Destrehan, Sieur De Peaupre (1716-1765). He was the son of Jean Baptiste Destrehan (ca. 1670-1740), who was counselor to King Louis XIV and treasurer of all arts and crafts guilds in Paris and its environs.
The plantation’s history consists of many notable people and events. The plantation served as a home to Marie Celeste Robin de Logny and her husband Jean Noel Destrehan, the most successful sugar producer in St. Charles Parish and one of the driving forces in Louisiana Statehood.
Destrehan, the oldest plantation home remaining in the lower Mississippi Valley, was originally established for indigo production. In 1787 Antoine Robert Robin DeLongy commissioned the original French Colonial–style mansion, which uses bousillage (mud- and straw-filled) walls supported by cypress timbers.
