Thiruvaiyaru Panchapakesa Rajalakshmi (11 November 1911 [1] – 1964 [2]) fondly known as "Cinema Rani T.P.R", was an Indian actress, first female director of South India, filmmaker, singer, producer & social reformist.
She learnt dance and music from Sankaradas Swamigal, a popular dramatist. Rajalakshmi got a grip on life in 1931, when she acted as the heroine in the first Tamil talkie, ‘Kalidas’. She had the honour of being the first Tamil actress and also got the special name ‘Cinema Rani’.
Performing at a time in history when men played women’s roles with overly feminine affectations, T.P. Rajalakshmi became one of the first-known female actors of the early-modern Tamil stage. This would be the first of many glass ceilings she would rise above.
T.P. Rajalakshmi was the first woman to earn the honorific title of ‘Cinema Rani’. She was also the first woman to wear so many hats - the first actress, the first woman director, producer, script and dialogue writer of Tamil cinema.
