Walerian Borowczyk (21 October 1923 – 3 February 2006) was a Polish film director described by film critics as a "genius who also happened to be a pornographer". He directed 40 films between 1946 and 1988.

Walerian Borowczyk was born in Kwilcz, a village in Western Poland, on October 21, 1923. Between 1946 and 1951, he studied painting and sculpture at the Krakow Academy of Fine Arts. During the early 1950s, Borowczyk moved to Warsaw where he established himself as a designer of film posters.
Polish-born artist and filmmaker Borowczyk brought a surrealist's eye to his work. Based in Paris, he experimented with animated short films, moving on to features such as The Concert of Mr and Mrs Kabal (1963), Goto, Island of Love (1968), Immoral Tales (1974), and Dr Jekyll & His Women (1983).
