I have a PHP source file where  characters automatically got added in! I don't know from where they have come. I'm not getting any parse errors but it results in weird behavior in the execution of the file. E.g. header location functionality is not working sometimes!
The dieresis, le tréma, is a French accent found on only three vowels: ë, ï, and ü. You are getting the characters  on the first line because this sequence is the UTF-8 byte order mark (BOM). If a text file begins with a BOM, it's likely it was generated by a Windows program like Notepad.
