  3. Tourism in Vietnam is a component of the modern Vietnamese economy. In 2019, Vietnam received 18 million international arrivals, up from 2.1 million in the year 2000. The Vietnam National Administration of Tourism is following a long-term plan to diversify the tourism industry, which brings foreign exchange into the country. [1]

    • Phu Quoc. Best for beach lovers. About as far south as you can get from Hanoi without splashing into the Gulf of Thailand, the island of Phu Quoc is where beach worshippers come to pray.
    • Hanoi. Best for city slickers. Every trip has to start somewhere, and the ideal point of arrival for first-timers is Vietnam's historic capital. As well as easy infrastructure, inexpensive accommodation, world-class dining and more history than you'll ever have time to take in, Hanoi is the leaping-off point for the islands and outcrops around Halong Bay and the forest-draped trails of the mountainous northwest.
    • Lan Ha Bay and Bai Tu Long Bay. Best for iconic photos. The crowds mob Halong Bay, but for our money, the shimmering bays to the north and south have a slight edge over Vietnam's most famous collection of outcrops and islands.
    • Ho Chi Minh City. Best for a sense of the past. Cosmopolitan Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) is the southern counterweight to Hanoi in the north, taking its cultural cues from the Mekong Delta and neighboring Cambodia.
  4. Top Attractions in Vietnam. See all. These rankings are informed by traveller reviews—we consider the quality, quantity, recency, consistency of reviews, and the number of page views over time. 1. Old Quarter. 28,676. Neighbourhoods. Admission tickets from ₹412.

    • Pack for the climate. Perhaps the most important consideration when planning a trip to Vietnam is the weather. The south of the country sits firmly in the humid tropics, but the climate becomes increasingly temperate as you head north, and the highlands around Sapa can be downright chilly in winter.
    • Be rain ready. Vietnam is soaked by the southwest monsoon from May to September and the northeast monsoon from October to April, so check the weather in the areas you plan to visit.
    • Investigate the visa options. There are numerous ways to arrange the paperwork for a visit to Vietnam, some cheaper and quicker than others. You may not need a visa at all for a short trip, and electronic visas and visas on arrival are available for many nationalities – much less hassle than going to the embassy in person.
    • Get your jabs. As with anywhere in the tropics, there are tropical illnesses to be aware of in Vietnam. See your doctor at least a month before you travel to get up to date with vaccinations, and arrange anti-malarial medication if you plan to visit rural areas.
  5. Best Places to Visit. Attractions. Must-see attractions. War Remnants Museum. Ho Chi Minh City. To understand the US invasion of Vietnam, and contextualize its devastating impact on the country's civilians, this remarkable and deeply moving museum is… Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. North-Central Vietnam.
