Desmond Leo Haynes (born 15 February 1956) is a former Barbadian cricketer and cricket coach who played for the West Indies cricket team between 1978 and 1994. He was a member of the squads which won the 1979 Cricket World Cup as well as finishing as runners-up at the 1983 Cricket World Cup.

One half of arguably cricket’s most iconic opening combination, Desmond Haynes played 116 Tests and 238 ODIs for the West Indies. His combination with Gordon Greenidge was fundamental to the team’s dominance from the late 1970s to the mid-1990s.

- Early life: Haynes was born in the Holders Hill district of Barbados in a family that had nothing to do with cricket. However, the eldest of three brothers, Haynes picked up the bat as everyone in the area played cricket.
- Arrival in style: After a good first season, Haynes made his ODI debut against Australia at Antigua in February 1978. The match saw as many as 14 players make ODI debuts — nine Australians and five West Indians.
- Test debut: Haynes’ Test debut too was remarkable, when against the same opposition he scored 61 in his team’s innings victory. He scored two more fifties in his next two Test innings and soon became a force to be reckoned with.
- Handled the ball: Haynes was only the fourth man to be dismissed for handling the ball in Test cricket, when in late 1983 against India, he had been struck on the bat and pad by the ball, which then headed towards the stumps.
Desmond Haynes (born Feb. 15, 1956, Holder’s Hill, St. James, Barb.) is a West Indian cricketer considered one of the greatest opening batsmen in the history of the game. Haynes played in 116 Test matches and 238 one-day internationals, scoring more than 16,000 runs in both formats combined.
One of the greatest batsmen to ever play for the West Indies, the muscular Desmond Haynes, who was born in Barbados, formed a formidable opening partnership with fellow Barbadian, Gordon Greenidge in Test cricket which was integral to the success of the West Indies cricket team in the 1980’s.
