A son of the emperor Jahāndār Shah (reigned 1712–13), ʿĀlamgīr was always the puppet of more powerful men and was placed on the throne by the imperial vizier.
His conquests acquired him the regnal title Alamgir ('Conqueror'). The Mughals also surpassed Qing China as the world's largest economy and biggest manufacturing power. The Mughal military gradually improved and became one of the strongest armies in the world.
