Kumari Rukmani, the daughter of leading Tamil actress Nungambakkam Janaki from the 1930s, embarked on her film career during the shoot of the movie Harishchandra in Mumbai. Coincidentally staying in the room next to the lead actress TP Rajalakshmi, Rukmani was recommended by Rajalakshmi for the role of Lohidasan.
