George Gage, also known as Hōri Te Kou-o-rehua Keeti, was a prominent tohunga tākuta (healer) and Ringatu minister of Ngāti Maniapoto, Te Whānau-ā-Apanui and Te Whakatōhea descent. He had the power of prescience and spontaneous healing, and was respected by his people and doctors.
The central figure in this work is George Gage, a notable art dealer and political agent in the 1620s, acting for King James I and then Charles I. Both he and Van Dyck were in Rome in 1622 and 1623, and it is highly likely that the painting was made then.
The National Gallery, London. While Van Dyck may already have met the diplomat and artistic agent George Gage in Rubens’s Antwerp studio, the style and setting of the portrait he made of him indicate it was painted in Rome, where Van Dyck and Gage may have befriended each other.
