Sydney Cecil Newman OC (April 1, 1917 – October 30, 1997) was a Canadian film and television producer, who played a pioneering role in British television drama from the late 1950s to the late 1960s.
As one of the most powerful men in British television during the 1960s, Sydney Newman was responsible for television legends such as The Avengers (1961), Doctor Who (1963), Cathy Come Home (1966) and The Forsyte Saga (1967).
100 years ago this April 1st, Sydney Newman was born. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, he was an ebullient Canadian émigré that worked as a television executive in Britain, first for independent network ABC as a producer, then for the BBC as Head of Drama.
In January 1970, after a two-year appointment with the Associated British Picture Corporation during which time none of his projects ever made it to screen, Sydney Newman left the UK to return to Canada, describing his experience in the British film industry as “a futile waste.”
