John Milton Hay (October 8, 1838 – July 1, 1905) was an American statesman and official whose career in government stretched over almost half a century. Beginning as a private secretary and an assistant for Abraham Lincoln, he became a diplomat.

John Milton Hay (October 8, 1838 – July 1, 1905) was an American statesman, diplomat, author, journalist, and private secretary and assistant to Abraham Lincoln. He was a staunch supporter of the Union and of the emancipation of slaves.
During his tenure as secretary of state, Hay is credited with devising the American Open Door policy in China as well as a treaty that confirmed America's right to build a canal in Central America. John Milton Hay died in 1905.
