The Academy Award for Best Original Score is an award presented annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) to the best substantial body of music in the form of dramatic underscoring written specifically for the film by the submitting composer.
With America now a part of World War II, the Academy decided to go ahead with the 14th Academy Awards ceremony on Thursday, February 26, 1942. However, the mood was a little more subdued. The celebrities were asked not to wear formal attire and the evening was referred to as a “dinner” rather than a “banquet.”
For instance, there are many years where one film won the award for “Scoring of a Musical Picture”, and another film won the award for “Music Score of a Dramatic or Comedy Picture”. Today, we consider both films winners in the category of best “Original Score”.
