William Harrison Hays Sr. (/ h eɪ z /; November 5, 1879 – March 7, 1954) was an American politician, and member of the Republican Party. As chairman of the Republican National Committee from 1918 to 1921, Hays managed the successful 1920 presidential campaign of Warren G. Harding .
The Hays mss., 1900-1985, consists of the papers of Will Hays, Sr., Republican politician and the first President of the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America (MPPDA), and his son Will Hays, Jr., author and Indiana mayor.
His son Will Hays, Jr. was the mayor of Crawfordsville, Indiana, and the writer of the musical You're My Everything. Associated With His organization eventually led the Motion Picture Association of America, headed by Jack Valenti and other presidents in the continuing the struggle of balancing art and decency.
