In 2002, he founded Modernciné, a production company that focused on independently made horror films. Modernciné produced more than 20 films including The Woman (2011 film)|The Woman, The Girl Next Door (2007 film)|The Girl Next Door, All Cheerleaders Die, Jug Face, Offspring (2009 film) and Malignant (2013 film).
Following Modernciné, van den Houten founded Hood River Entertainment. A new production companyfocusing on a wider variety of independent feature films.
