Carlos Yunior Acosta Quesada CBE (born 2 June 1973) is a Cuban-British ballet director and retired dancer who is director of the Birmingham Royal Ballet. He danced with many companies, including the English National Ballet, National Ballet of Cuba, Houston Ballet and American Ballet Theatre.
Born in Cuba, Artistic Director, choreographer and dancer, Carlos Acosta trained at The National Ballet School of Havana and has danced professionally with many of the world’s most prestigious companies.
About Carlos. Born in 1973, Carlos grew up as the 11th child of an impoverished family in one of Havana’s poorest districts. With the persuasion of his father, Carlos was sent to train at the National Ballet School of Cuba.

Carlos Acosta is the Chairman and Founder of the Acosta Dance Foundation and considered, perhaps, the most famous dancer of his generation. Carlos is a career that wasn’t meant to be – a tough kid from the backstreets of Havana who was forced to study ballet and became a reluctant star.
Carlos retired from classical ballet in 2016, having performed almost every classical role from Spartacus to Romeo – and in January 2020, he became Director of Birmingham Royal Ballet. Carlos has created many award-winning shows, including Tocororo and Carlos Acosta & Friends of The Royal Ballet.
