Little is known of the life of Johann David Wyss. He was born on May 28, 1743, in Bern, Switzerland, and in his young adulthood served as a military chaplain in Italy. Later he was the rector of the Reformed Protestant Cathedral in Bern and apparently gained a reputation as an accomplished linguist.
