They fought before the public in hugely popular organised games held in large purpose-built arenas throughout the Roman Empire from 105 BCE to 404 CE (official contests).

A gladiator ( Latin: gladiator, "swordsman", from gladius, "sword") was an armed combatant who entertained audiences in the Roman Republic and Roman Empire in violent confrontations with other gladiators, wild animals, and condemned criminals.
- Spartacus. A Thracian soldier by birth, Spartacus was captured by the Romans and then sold as a slave. His owner owned a gladiator school in Capua and he saw the opportunity to cash in on Spartacus’s skills as a gladiator.
- Flamma. Flamma is one of the biggest names among ancient Roman gladiators. Of course, his true name wasn’t Flamma, which was just his battle name, meaning “flame”.
- Commodus. Commodus was an infamous Roman emperor who was obsessed with performing in the arena as a gladiator. Many of us may know him from Joaquin Phoenix’s portrayal in the film Gladiator.
- Crixus. A well-known military leader during the Third Servile War, Crixus used to be a Gallic gladiator who enjoyed noteworthy success against much bigger opponents.
- Types of gladiators. There were over two dozen different types of gladiators, distinguished from each other by the weapons they used, the armor they wore, the fighting styles they employed, and the events at which they fought.
- Were there women gladiators? There were female gladiators, although they were a very small minority and according to writings from the times, they were apparently viewed as an oddity and a peculiar entertainment, more than as simply a regular type of gladiator.
- Gladiator training. Gladiators belonged to the infame class, infamous, and as such their lives were forfeit and belonged to their masters. Gladiatorial schools were incredibly strict, and the training they provided was harsh, with some archaeological evidence suggesting that gladiators could be killed as punishment for misbehavior.
- Famous gladiators. Most gladiators lived and died anonymously, but a few became popular celebrities and their names have reached the present day. Crixus was a Gallic slave and gladiator that escaped captivity and became one of the leaders of the rebel army in the Third Servile War, between slaves and the Roman republic.
- Organized fights between men and beasts carried on for hundreds of years after gladiators were outlawed. Even after the Emperor Constantine outlawed gladiatorial fights in the year 325, gory entertainment continued for another 300 years.
- Rome’s first Christian Emperor brought the age of gladiators to an end in the year 325 – though gladiators remained slaves. Gladiatorial games were finally brought to an end in the year 325 by the Emperor Constantine.
- The Emperor Nero was a massive gladiator fan – and even requested his favorite fighter give him a swift death when he was overthrown. When the notorious Emperor Nero was overthrown in 68AD he had one last request.
- Gladiators drank water mixed with ashes to get their strength back after a fight. According to the ancient writer and historian Pliny the Elder, gladiators had a unique way of getting back into peak fitness after a gruelling fight.
