Mikado is a pick-up sticks game originating in Europe, played with a set of same-length sticks which can measure between 17 and 20 cm (6.7 and 7.9 in).. In 1936, it was brought from Hungary (where it was called Marokko) to the United States and named pick-up sticks.This term is not very specific in respect to existing stick game variations. The "Mikado" name may have been avoided because it was a brand name of a game producer.

The Mikado, in full The Mikado; or, The Town of Titipu, Operetta in two acts by W.S. Gilbert (libretto) and Arthur Sullivan (music) that premiered at the Savoy Theatre in London on March 14, 1885. The Mikado is set in the 1880s, in the imaginary Japanese town of Titipu. Nanki-Poo, the son of Japanese emperor Mikado, has fled there to avoid marrying Katisha, an older woman, and he ends up falling in love with Yum-Yum, who is betrothed to the Lord High Executioner Ko-Ko.
