A British producer whose best known credits included The Krays (1990) and The Crying Game (1992), Cowan began his career as a lab technician at Technicolor. He was also infamously the third assistant director tasked with causing Barbara Windsor’s bra to fly off in Carry On Camping (1969).

He retired from the Film Board in 2009, after directing Paris 1919, a film adaptation of Margaret MacMillan’s Peacemakers: The Paris Peace Conference of 1919 and Its Attempt to End War. Cowan’s NFB career was prolific and celebrated.
