Jason Haam is pleased to present Jonathan Gardner: Horizon, the artist’s first introduction in Asia and solo exhibition with the gallery.The artist’s signature style of flattened pictorial space, hyper-stylized compositions, and depictions of dream-like worlds come together in familiar, yet imaginary scenes that are drawn from Gardner’s own personal experience and collective memory.
So Jonathan Gardner’s eight candy-coloured oil paintings, over half of which depict nude or semiclothed, blank-faced female ‘types’ or disembodied breasts and legs, might be, as the press release tells us, ‘representing a style of painting as opposed to representing a subject’, but it is nevertheless women’s bodies (not animals, men, food or landscape) that are both style and subject matter here.
His paintings develop a highly stylized work – on Jonathan Gardner’s canvases floats a wistful and comical atmosphere.
