The tomb of Humayun, second Mughal Emperor of India, was built by his widow, Biga Begum (Hajji Begum), in 1569-70, 14 years after his death, at a cost of 1.5 million rupees. The architect was Mirak Mirza Ghiyath. It was later used for the burial of various members of the ruling family and contains some 150 graves.
It houses the graves of both the emperor and his wife, and stands as a testament to their love. Construction for Humayun’s Tomb began in 1565 and was finished in 1572. Designed by Persian architect Mirak Mirza Ghiyas, the mausoleum stands on a 7 metre-high platform, while the tomb is 47 metres in height and 91 metres in breadth.

Following his death in 1556, his widow and chief consort, the Persian born Empress Bega Begum (also often known as Haji Begum), commissioned a magnificent tomb for her late husband.
