The department encourages top-class innovation in both its research activities as well as pedagogy, on topics ranging from fundamental nature to those with immediate technological applications. The department currently has 59 faculty members, 200 graduate and 250 undergraduate students.
The Department of Physics -- set in the sylvan campus of IIT Madras -- conducts research in many frontier areas. These areas include experimental solid state physics, optical and laser physics, and various aspects of theoretical and computational physics ranging from condensed matter to string theory and cosmology.

Program Overview. Open to students with bachelors degree in science or engineering . There is a variety of core-courses that emphasize the fundamentals while keeping in mind the evolving nature of subjects. A strong laboratory component allows you explore a range of experiments from classic ones to those that are more recent and advanced.
I am M. S. Ramachandra Rao, Professor in the Physics department, IIT Madras and head the 'Nanostructured systems and Advanced Materials group' located in the Materials Science Research Centre. Our research activities are primarily focused on Physics and Applications of Nanostructures.

The core courses of the IDDD QuST programme are offered by faculty from the departments of Physics and Electrical Engineering., while the suggested elective courses are spread out across Physics, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science.
Over the past decade, I have also taught a broad spectrum of theory courses at IIT Madras – to list them as complementing pairs: ‘classical’ and ‘quantum’ physics; ‘mathematical’ physics and ‘experimental’ physics, ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ condensed matter physics.
