Alfred Marshall was born in London, of modest bourgeois background, the second son of William Marshall, a clerk at the Bank of England. He was educated at Merchant Taylors, a non-residential private school, and acquired a school record of some distinction, demonstrating a strong early aptitude and skill for mathematics.
